As a baby, Josephine Fairley loved to create her own natural, home-made skincare; as an adult, she would go on to have a stellar career as a beauty editor in a world of high-tech beauty. But what if these polar opposites could meet?Read more
“Which world conflict would you like to see resolved first?” It’s a big question, and not an easy one to answer, but this month’s Wild One interviewee, the BBC Radio 6 DJ, former member of Big Audio Dynamite and world-class rebel dread, Don Letts, answers it succinctly: “The conflict between mankind and itself. It’s what keeps us wallowing in the mud instead of flying with the angels.”
Here in the UK, we’ve just experienced one of the hottest Februarys on record. While it’s lovely to experience such warmth so early, it’s also a prime example of the conflict between mankind that Letts is talking about. If we’re not careful (some say even if we are), soon there’ll be less wallowing in the mud and more wailing about our lack of water.
Cue Tom Loxley’s excellent piece about biodiversity. As a child of the 1970s, he grew up with pesticides, but will the children of the 2000s be growing up without any pests at all? Reminding us why we need to keep the delicate balance of nature afloat in whatever we choose to grow could not be more timely.
Meanwhile, from mud to angels – the big heart of Carmel McConnell, interviewed by David Annand, is what turned a chance conversation about hungry schoolchildren into a charity that by the end of the year will be feeding breakfast to over a thousand schools every morning. It’s all food for thought – that we can, should we choose to accept the challenges before us, do something to change the status quo.
For those who’ve stumbled on to the Papers while hoping to order some Wildsmith Skin, what does this all have to do with getting great skin? It’s about making the connections between inner and outer beauty, refusing to limit ourselves in order to free our potential, but most of all, it’s about stepping up to life. That natural glow will follow, we promise. (Okay, with a little help from some great skincare and – according to Danielle Fox in this issue – some truly brilliant gadgets to max out the results!)
Wishing a big spring in your step to one and all,
